Timisoara, 2nd April, 2019 – Timisoara-based software solutions provider LASTING Software has formalized its long-term collaboration with Belgian-based satellite communications company NEWTEC by setting up a new, dedicated software solutions research and development (R&D) center. Backed by major public and private sector players – such as mobile network leader Nokia, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and the Politehnica University Timisoara – the LASTING Software – NEWTEC venture aims to turn Timisoara into a hotspot for Satellite telecom expertise via a joint 600K EUR investment in a local R&D center.


LASTING Software has signed a business agreement with NEWTEC, the global technology company specialized in designing, developing and manufacturing equipment and technologies for satellite communications. The LASTING Software – NEWTEC agreement formalizes a successful existing partnership and collaboration between the two entities: over the past 18 months, the joint LASTING Software – NEWTEC team in Timisoara has grown to 12 dedicated engineers developing satellite backhaul solutions for mobile communications.

NEWTEC brings to the table 30+ years’ experience in satellite communications, as well as considerable knowledge in mobile network technologies. LASTING Software is a technology leader and one of the earliest established software solutions providers in Western Romania, currently focused on areas such as telecommunications, graphics, mobile & IoT & Cloud, analytics & Big Data.

The project for the establishment of a telecom R&D center in Timisoara is co-financed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and coordinated at national level by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA); the latter has provided support in accelerating the growth of the dedicated project engineering team in Timisoara. The development of the satellite backhaul solution for mobile communication is supported and facilitated by Nokia. The latter is working closely with the LASTING Software and NEWTEC team on a proof of concept (PoC) consisting of an end to end platform that will validate the satellite backhauling solution currently being developed, and which will function for 2G, 3G, 4G and soon 5G mobile networks.

All the players involved in this project led by LASTING Software and NEWTEC, see great value in the continued development of an ecosystem of telecom-related know-how, expertise and infrastructure in Timisoara, turning the latter into an attractive hub for students and experienced professionals alike.

It’s hardly news that traditional telecom businesses are in a tight spot. Changing their portfolio or gradually fading away – here are the available alternatives.
