Not long ago, the Verge published a full feature, centered on an interview with Patrick Brady, the head of Android Auto. Their material catches up on where projected Android Auto is today. It also reveals a few key points in Google’s futures strategy for the modern Android Auto. Among these, having Android Auto – powered aftermarket systems.

 

Highlights concerning Android Auto:

-Google agreed with Volvo and Audi to start rolling out the modern Android Auto systems, starting 2020

-Having a system integrated into the car’s system-level operations comes with Google Assistant functions. Passengers will be able to “turn on the heat, turn off the seat warmers, or even book maintenance appointments” via customizable UIs.

-The future of in-car infotainment systems is not so much about adoption, in Google’s view – which they estimate is a given. With what they see as an almost ubiquitous compatibility, the focus is on “improving the core experience”.

-Helping users access the desired content while in the car, in a more safe and seamless way, translates into a search for more simplified, convenient solutions.

[Seeing] the consumer demand for things like CarPlay and Android Auto (…) the carmakers want to enable that digital ecosystem in their embedded offering, in their infotainment system.

-The company intends to implement a big UI refresh, too. Bringing the same system to the motorcycles is yet another goal. All the environment-related UI variations ask for a reconciliation and flexibility that needs to be creative.

-Google has carmakers (among which Honda, Volvo or General Motors), representing over 50% of the annual car volumes “adopting Android as the built-in system”.

-The perspective includes running the Google apps seamlessly on this embedded systems, with carmakers currently making steps in this direction.

-Besides the automotive industry, Google wants their platform to be relevant for developers. This means both developing the platform itself, as well as setting firm limits.

-Over-the-air updates are part of the process of building connectivity. Even more, this way of delivering updates represents the trend. When upgrades replace updates, it’s about delivering new features in a fast way. For now, different Google partners are inclined towards different alternatives. However, there is an expectancy of the most convenient formula revealing itself, via use and practical validation.

-Cars having software-related capabilities and features gradually becomes a differentiator in choosing a car to buy or rent.

-There is no exclusion (for now), when it comes to Android Auto and Car Play, as Patrick Brady sees it. It’s more a question of integration and synchronization. The user simply wants a seamless experience, regardless of the platform an app is running on.

The ultimate platform move (…) letting the apps get in front of the user and speak for themselves (…) it doesn’t matter where they’re coming from.

-The future of Android Auto lies in showcasing a truly modern digital experience for the passengers in a car. This encourages app developers and tech innovators to be creative on all levels – from concept and MVPs to the intricate technical ways of delivering the intended experience to its recipients.

We want to leave carmakers, or mobile manufacturers, whoever it may be, a lot of room to innovate as long as it doesn’t break some of the core tenets of the platform as they apply to consumers and developers. So that’s really where we try to draw a hard line.

A couple of days ago, Microsoft launched a series of updates that benefit the developers. At their Ignite event (Orlando, FL), the company revealed the new and improved features in many of its product lines, in theme with their AI & ML focus for 2018.

We browsed TechCrunch’s report of the notable developer-centric updates.

 

For the Microsoft Azure Machine Learning services

The selection, testing and tweaking processes become mostly automated. This way the developers can save important time. They are also able to build, “without having to delve into the depths of TensorFlow, PyTorch or other AI frameworks.”

Also, more hardware-accelerated models for FPGAs will be available from now on.(*FPGAs – powerful field programmable gate arrays, used “for high-speed image classification and recognition scenarios on Azure”)

Microsoft decided to add a Python SDK to the mix, too, making Azure Machine Learning more accessible from a wider variety of devices. According to Microsoft, this SDK “integrates the Azure Machine Learning service with Python development environments including Visual Studio Code, PyCharm, Azure Databricks notebooks and Jupyter notebooks”. It also lights up a number of different features, such as “deep learning, which enables developers to build and train models faster with massive clusters of graphical processing units, or GPUs” and link into the FPGAs mentioned above.

 

For the Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services


The Microsoft speech service for speech recognition and translation also features an upgrade. The improvements are in terms of voice quality, as well as availability.

Apparently, now the voices generated by the Azure Cognitive Services’ deep learning-based speech synthesis are true to life.

 

For the Microsoft Bot Framework SDK

The company declared that now it’s much easier for any developer to build its first bot.

*However, TechCrunch’s comment for this reminds us that the bots hype is a thing of the past at the moment. Therefore, it remains to be seen how many developers will take advantage of the new features. Nevertheless, more natural human – computer interactions are now available on the Microsoft Bot Framework SDK.
